You will be teaching English to Chinese students ranging in age from kindergarten to college in a private Chinese school. ELIC's China Teaching Fellowship (CTF) staff will work to place you in the grade level you desire, but it is not guaranteed that this request can be accommodated.  For many of your students, this will be the first time they have ever come in personal contact with a foreign teacher.   You are encouraged to pursue relationships with both the students and the Chinese teachers at the school where you'll be placed.  Quite often these friendships will be the start of life-long meaningful relationships.

The educational goal of the CTF program is to assist the Chinese schools in achieving their English language proficiency goals.  The CTF curriculum will provide the general structure for your classes which meet for a total of 15-16 hours each week in the classroom.  Your afternoons will be spent preparing for the next day's lessons and interacting with your students outside of the classroom. Teachers have found their 'out-of-class' times with students to be of great value.  Opportunities for spending time with students range everywhere from bike rides to sports, to cooking lessons and sightseeing on the weekends.  Students are eager to spend as much time as possible with their foreign teachers, and you'll be encouraged as you observe progress in your student's English speaking abilities through such informal activities.
The real world requires real responsibilities. Teaching in China is no different, and the following list represents just a few of the academic responsibilities you'll have both in and out of the classroom:
  • Prepare lesson plans and teach assigned classes.
  • Adapt teaching materials utilizing the materials provided.
  • Provide students with grades and corrected assignments in a timely manner.
  • Meet with your team on a weekly basis to discuss teaching methods and academic issues.
  • Study Chinese with a teacher provided by the school.

If you take this job seriously, you'll change the face of the world.  The students in your classroom will be the future leaders of China, one of the emerging global powers of the 21st century.  You have an amazing and unique opportunity to make an impact through the following relationship-building responsibilities:
  • Develop personal relationships with your Chinese students and teaching associates.
  • Be available to students and teaching associates outside of class for informal talks and activities.
  • Attend official school functions, banquets, trips and activities.
  • Offer your life and hope as a living example through your attitudes and actions.
